Sunho Choi, PhD, Partner


SPECIALTY AREA: Mergers and Acquisitions

Dr. Sunho Choi has 20 years of experience planning and executing financial advisory assignments for a wide array of companies, including some well-known billion dollar cross border M&A financings. As President of Seoul-based M&A Engineering since 1995, he focuses exclusively on private equity and management buy-in investment opportunities for Korean manufacturing companies with annual turnover of U$50 million to U$300 million. In 2002, he served as Interim Chief Financial Officer for Sewon Telecom, the third largest mobile phone manufacturer in Korea with annual turnover of U$550 million. Among notable transactions during this period, he acted as Financial Advisor to Tong Kook Synthetic Fiber for the disposition of its spandex business to DuPont; Air Products & Chemicals in its purchase of a Korean specialty chemical company; Jin Heung Fine Chemicals on the sale of the Company to an acquirer; Lojit Corporation, a major Korean chemical distributor, in its M&A strategy; and a famous Yogurt Ice Cream Franchiser in Korea for the sale of its business.

From 1991 through 1995, Dr. Choi was Seoul Branch Manager of Price Waterhouse with primary responsibility for new business opportunities in cross-border M&A and strategic consulting for major Korean companies like Samsung, Hyundai and POSCO. Among notable transactions, he helped sell the Microelectronic Packaging business of Samsung Corning’s Ceramic Division; advised a Samsung-led consortium for the purchase of Indonesian oil fields; advised Hanwha Group in their purchase of a European telecom equipment manufacturer; and acted as advisor to Boral Elevators in business negotiations with Samsung Group.

Prior to Price Waterhouse, he was a Senior Economist at Daewoo Research Institute and a Foreign Exchange Officer at Korea Exchange Bank. He has a Ph.D. in Finance from University of Georgia and BA in Business from Yonsei University. He was also Assistant Professor of Finance at Mercer University, the oldest college in Georgia.

In other activities, Dr. Choi has contributed numerous articles on M&A to Korea Economic Daily and other newspapers and journals. He is a frequent speaker on M&A at various business, economic and financial forums. He was a Member of the M&A Regulation Reform Committee of the Ministry of Finance in 1996 to review and revise all M&A-related laws and regulations in Korea.
